moving house

Everyone who has had to move will tell you how frustrating the whole process is. It doesn’t have to be that way though.

If you are looking for some helpful tips on how you can have a stress free and organized moving experience, you are in the right place. This guide by Strutt & Parker – estate agents in St Albans highlights what you need to know for packing up & moving house

Document everything in a list

You can’t commit all the things you have to memory so the best thing to do is to jot everything down. Trust me; you will be glad you did. You should do this even before you start packing. You can use a spiral notebook or create a numbered list on the computer. These numbers should then be placed on each box and it should have the contents of the box written on it. When describing the contents inside a box make sure you are very specific. Example, ‘casserole dishes’ instead of ‘kitchen stuff’.

Get ready with enough moving supplies

People often underestimate how much they will need come the day of moving. Take my word for it; you will need a lot of supplies. For this reason, stock up on enough of what you will need. This includes boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap or packing paper which can also be substituted with unprinted newsprint.

Make use of wardrobe boxes

Inquire from your moving company about the width of the wardrobe boxes they will be coming with. These are usually the perfect choice for things like blankets, pillows, quilts and clothes that have to remain hanging. Proceed to measure the clothes that are in your closets to determine just how many of those boxes you will need. Be careful however not to put things that are too heavy in these boxes as they can give way if too heavy.

Have a plan prior to moving day

Most moving and transport companies in port pirie (or elsewhere), would probably offer to deliver you the boxes prior to the day of moving. Alternatively, you could be moving without any help. Whichever the case, it’s best that you get things organized in advance. Put things like shoes, belts, sweaters and jeans into your sturdy shopping bags and then place these bags at the bottom of the wardrobe boxes then fill them with your hanging clothes. Always make sure that you pack hanging clothes as tight as possible to avoid them falling off the hangers. Finally, when it comes to moving larger items such as your car, you’ll want to ensure that you have a company like RCG Logistics included in your plan. Trying to organise something like this last minute, will only add stress to the move.

Use Colour coordination

This method is very simple. Simply assign a colour for each room in the house you will be moving into. Say orange for kitchen, green for living room and so on and so forth. At your new home, place a coloured sticker on the door in line with what you marked your boxes with. That way your mover will know immediately what goes where. If you have to, you can also indicate where exactly you want the movers to place the boxes using a big sign written “Boxes Here Please”.

Keep Things Organized

Things that are closely associated should always be moved close to each other if they are in different boxes. For instance books should always be kept close to bookends as lamps should be kept close to extension cords. Loose parts can also be attached to the item either by placing them in a small envelope and taping them to the item they are used with.

You can also set aside a box and label it ‘parts’ which you can put your cords, cables, nails, brackets and any other thing that is associated with furniture. Keep this box close to you on moving day considering how small some of those parts are and also mark it with multi colours to make it more recognizable.

Pack In Advance

You will be saving yourself a lot of time and unnecessary agony by packing prior to moving day. If you have to live out your last few days in your soon to be old house out of a cosmetic and suit case. Use minimal utensils and don’t use too much food supplies. Change from wastebuckets to plastic grocery bags to dispose of waste.

Keep Cleaning Supplies Close

If you have to clean your old house before leaving, gather a basic cleaning kit comprising of rugs and supplies. Do your best to clean before the day of moving. You can also vacuum as soon as movers have removed all the boxes from a room

Find Space In Your Luggage

Your duffel bags and luggage can be used as storage space for towels, bed sheets and light clothing

Keep Your Valuables Safe

Not everyone can be trusted and moving day can be quite hectic with your house filled with people and a buzz of activity. For this reason, always keep valuable possessions with you at all times. This includes important documents.

Provide Family Members With Personal Boxes

Mark boxes with different bright colours and assign them to your family members. Let them use these boxes to put their personal items which they will want to use as soon as they have reached the new home. Such things include a phone, pens and notebooks, Kleenex, a towel, a pair of bed sheets and so on and so forth.

Moving out does not have to make you want to pull your hair out. Make use of these tips and you will have a fun day moving no doubt!
